Seedfunding sm

The Ontario Trillium Foundation has generously funded RCHS through a Seed Grant pilot project to support social and emotional learning in our DJ Schoular after school 2016-2017 program year. The priority outcome for this project is for more children and youth to have emotional and social strengths. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is when children learn and use knowledge, attitudes, and skills to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, develop positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Our focus is to integrate intentional social and emotional skills into our after school program in a variety of ways and share what works well. Our program includes games, art, science, cooking, and other activities that focus on empathy, mindfulness, kindness, appreciation, making good choices, and teamwork. Staff are developing curriculum, training others, and designing resources to be shared with after school programs such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Table, Mississipi Mills Youth Centre, Lanark Highlands, and North Lanark Health Centres. When children have skills to help them with self-awareness, self-management, and good relationships, they will do better in school, have healthy friendships, and learn tools for dealing with stress and anxiety now and in their future. This is an important part of promoting the importance of health and wellness in our lives, our families, and our community.

Thank you to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their generous funding.
