Tick Bite Prevention

  • Stay on paths in woods and brush covered areas
  • In areas known to have ticks, wear long sleeves, pants and boots or shoes
  • Tuck pants into socks
  • Bug sprays that have DEET in them help prevent tick attachment, apply every 2 hours
  • Check for ticks on your body daily
  • Keep pets off furniture, ticks can crawl off them and onto you

After being in a tick populated area;

  • Take a shower, and scrub into your hair, it can help wash away a crawling tick
  • Put your clothes into the dryer on high heat for 15 minutes. Do not wash the clothes first. Ticks can survive the wash!
  • Use a lint roller or duct tape on clothing to remove crawling ticks

I’ve Been Bit!  What Now?

Talk to your health care provider if;

  • You are unsure how long the tick has been attached or it has been on you longer than 24 hours
  • The tick seems to be engorged (body is round and not flat)
  • You have symptoms of Lyme disease

- Make sure you speak to your healthcare team as soon as you remove the tick, preventative treatment must be started within 72 hours of removing an engorged black legged tick.

- Bring the tick to your appointment for identification if possible

- Mark the date on your calendar when you were bit, remember to watch for symptoms up to one month from the date


How to Safely Remove a Tick

  • Remove the tick using fine point tweezers, or a tick removing device.
  • Get as close to the skin or head of tick as possible, pull straight out with a firm grasp on tick.
  • Try not to squeeze the body of the tick while removing.
  • Clean and disinfect the bite site.
  • If you do not get all of the mouth of the tick out, don’t panic and do not try to dig it out. Your body will push it out, much like a small sliver. Ensure to keep the area clean.
